BARNES & NOBLE

Barnes and Noble Bookstore
Barnes & Noble is a company driven by the principle that bookselling is important work.  For us, there is no more rewarding experience than helping customers step into new worlds through literature, reach their aspirations through books that teach and inspire, or discover new writers that entertain and enlighten.

Our booksellers make the Barnes & Noble experience special for our customers, and we recognize their contributions and make enormous efforts to create a rewarding career experience for each of them by offering competitive compensation and benefits packages.  In addition, we actively promote from within – more than 70% of our store managers started as booksellers.

We believe a great bookstore is also a reflection of its community.  We pioneered the concept of a retail store as a community center, and annually host more than 100,000 community events nationwide.

If you want to join our community of booksellers, please check out our job listings on HotJobs.com, or download a job application and take it to your local store.

Note: You must be at least 16 years old to work at Barnes & Noble.  If you are 16 or 17 years old, you may also need working papers.  Please check with your state department of labor for details about the minimum age requirement to obtain working papers.  Thank you.

Requirements

An entrepreneurial spirit, an enjoyment of the free exchange of ideas, and management abilities — these are just a few of the things we look for when evaluating talent.

Benefits

We're one of the few companies that offers health coverage to part-time employees.  We were one of the first companies to offer domestic partner coverage.  We tailor our insurance coverage to fit your needs and your pocketbook.  We offer one of the most generous 401(k) plans in the country.  And, since Barnes & Noble is first and foremost a bookseller, we offer a 30% book discount and substantial discounts on other merchandise in our stores.

Protection Today

  • Medical Plan – Our comprehensive PPO plan includes coverage for an annual physical, well-child care, vision exams and prescription drugs.  Coverage is higher, and out-of-pocket costs are lower, when preferred providers are used, but booksellers are free to choose non-network doctors and facilities.
  • Dental Plan – The plan covers preventive visits at 100%, and also covers basic and major dental services.
  • Flexible Spending Account – Booksellers can use this account to pay many out-of-pocket healthcare costs and save money at the same time by using before-tax earnings.

Paid vacation time is also provided to full-time and part-time booksellers.  You may take one week of vacation after six months.  After that, annual vacation time is based on length of service starting at two weeks of vacation after one year with us.

Building Financial Security

  • 401(k) Savings Plan – After 1,000 hours of service, our plan matches your savings dollar for dollar, up to 4% of earnings.  Even better, the company contribution is yours to keep.  You must be at least age 18 to participate.
  • Our paid sick day policy and short- and long-term disability plans provide valuable protection if you are unable to work due to illness or injury.
  • Barnes & Noble provides basic life insurance equal to annual earnings.  Booksellers can choose additional coverage of one, two or three times earnings.  Coverage for your spouse, or domestic partner, and children is also available.  The business travel plan provides additional coverage when your job requires you to travel.

Continuing Education

  • Our continuing education program offers full-time booksellers tuition assistance if you choose to further your business career by taking courses toward a job-related degree.
  • You can also increase your product knowledge, or read for fun, through our book loan program.
